BTEC Performing Arts (Acting) at The Bishop of Winchester Academy

Course description

The Level 3 BTEC in Performing Arts is an exciting, vocationally based course designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment in the dance and performing arts industry. Alternatively it can be used for progression to higher national diplomas or degrees in dance and performing arts. The Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to 1 A Level.  Students will be encouraged to attend professional performances and apply the working methods and approaches used by professionals within the industry.  Its highly practical nature allows for a broad and advanced exploration of a number of key, performance-based skills.

Course content

For the Subsidiary Diploma, equivalent to 1 A Level, you will study 2 core units:

  • Performing to an Audience
  • Principles of Acting

Additional units:

  • Devising Plays
  • Drama Improvisation
  • Developing Physical Theatre
  • Applying Acting Styles

Entry requirements

You should meet the standard 6th Form entry criteria and also have achieved a minimum of a GCSE grade B or Merit at Level 2 BTEC equivalent.  If you have previous experience or have followed a GCSE course in Drama, Dance or the Expressive Arts, this could be to your advantage, but it is not essential. Most importantly you should enjoy working individually and in groups and have a commitment to rehearsing both individually and as part of a small group, which may be required outside of the normal 6th Form hours.

There is no written examination for either BTEC qualification.  Assessment is through a continual process of monitoring portfolios, observed practical rehearsal work and performances. Portfolios will typically consist of working diaries, research material, photographs, video recordings of rehearsals and evaluative reflections of skills gained and actions to improve skills identified. All work is internally assessed and externally moderated by the examination board.

Future opportunities

The Subsidiary Diploma will provide you with a qualification equivalent to 1 A Level.  This qualification will give you a wide choice of progression options into further study at university, drama or dance school, or into relevant employment.
