Music A Level at Notre Dame Catholic College

Course description

The course is delivered in accordance with the AQA specification. Units 3 and 6 require the students to present a short concert programme where they will demonstrate their individual prowess on voice or their chosen instrument.

Unit 1: Influences on Music (written examination)
· The Western Classical Tonal Tradition (compulsory)
· British Popular Music from 1960-the present day

Unit 2: Composing: Creating Musical Ideas (coursework)
· Compositional techniques
· Free composition or pastiche in response to a given brief
· Arranging

Unit 3: Performing: Interpreting Musical Ideas (coursework)
· Solo and/or ensemble performances

Unit 4: Music in Context (written examination)
· The Western Classical Tradition (compulsory)
· Four Decades of Jazz and Blues (1910-1950)

Unit 5: Composing: Creating Musical Ideas (coursework)
· Compositional techniques
· Free composition or pastiche in response to a chosen brief
· Arranging

Unit 6: Performing: A Musical Experience (coursework)
· A choice of solo, acoustic and/or technology-based performances
