Creative Media Production - BTEC Level 3 at Kesgrave High School

Course description

This personalised, practical course enables students to research a range of media industries before planning, creating and evaluating their own products in a variety of media formats.

The course enables students to start building a range of technical skills and knowledge, which will help them begin working professionally in the various sectors of media production. Students will gain insight into the career opportunities available in the media industry, enabling them to make an informed choice regarding career progression or moving on to further study.

Course content

The course is divided into a series of units, with students being able to select from a range of optional topics.

Year 1 – BTEC Level 3 Certificate (Equivalent to one ‘AS’ grade)

Unit 1 - Pre-Production Techniques for the Creative Media Industries

Unit 2 - Communication Skills for Creative Media Production

Units 3 and 4 will be selected from a range of options.

Year 2 – BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (Equivalent to one ‘A2’ grade)

Unit 1 – Research Techniques for the Creative Media Industries

Units 2 and 3 will be selected from a range of options.

Each unit begins in the classroom, moves into independent research and then practical application.

Entry requirements

No prior learning is required - just an interest in the subject.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a series of applied practical tasks, which will demonstrate research, planning, creation and evaluation skills. Students are assessed on a portfolio of evidence and their media products; there is no final examination.

Board : Edexcel

Future opportunities

With the international recognition of BTEC courses such as this, students can progress straight into employment, for example: Audio-Visual Technician, Radio Sound Engineer or TV/Film Editor.

The BTEC National in Creative Media is equivalent to one GCE A Level and it is possible for students to use the qualification to progress further into higher education.
