Equine Studies – Horse Care Level 2 Apprenticeship at Sparsholt College

Course description

For people who love horses and care about their welfare there are many opportunities for work including livery yards, riding schools, racing yards and training yards. Apprentices could work as a stable hand, groom, stud assistant or riding instructor.

The ideal apprentice will have a passion for horses, be sympathetic and caring, good at communicating and good at working as part of a team.

Course content

An apprenticeship in horse care will provide essential skills such as maintaining the health and well-being of horses, preparing horses for use, preparing and cleaning stables, grazing, exercise and aftercare and loading horses under supervision.

An apprenticeship will also help develop a professional working style, safe working practices, awareness of the work environment and communicating effectively with colleagues and customers.

Other skills will include functional skills needed in the work place (Maths, English, ICT) and specialist qualifications such as the BHS Equine Specific First Aid Course and the BHS Stage 2 Certificate in Horse Knowledge and Care.
