Art A.S. and A2 Level (Edexcel) at The Windsor Boys' School
The course builds upon the units studied at GCSE level. The first unit is project based on the theme “A Sense of Place” and “Portraiture”. Students can develop their own topic on this theme but they have to research artists that are relevant to the direction of the work they want to follow. Research is a heavy component to the A level course. This unit finishes in February and is worth 60% of a student’s grade. After this, students are issued an exam topic which students also build a project around and then make a final piece for it in exam conditions. The topic for the exam changes each year.
The course asks students to visit a gallery or exhibition of their choice in the summer holidays after their AS course. Selecting an appropriate exhibition is crucial as students have to develop their work similar to the artist’s work they saw. In addition to a portfolio of work, students have to submit a 3,000 word essay and so they must be able to analyse artist’s work critically and in depth. The student’s use of English is very important to their grade so any parental support would be very much appreciated. This unit finishes in February and similar to the AS course, after this, students are issued an exam topic which they also build a project around and then make a final piece for it in exam conditions. The topic for the exam changes each year.
As Art remains an academically rigorous and demanding subject, the department asks that students achieve at least a C grade in English Language and have already achieved at least a B grade in his GCSE Art.
