Course content

Photography is an exciting A level course combining photography with cutting edge technologies. Students gain expertise with a range of processes, studio techniques and Adobe Photoshop.

Skills developed in problem solving, reflection and analysis are directly transferable to other courses.

The course would suit students with an interest in Art, Design, Technology, Film, Media, Psychology or ICT.

As part of the course you will visit galleries and explore the work of other photographers in the context of journalism and fine art photography.

You will develop knowledge of studio based and on site photography exploring lighting techniques and special effects with digital manipulation.

Visits to locations of photographic interest will form a regular feature of practical work.

This course emphasises the development of new skills through
understanding of the camera and of digital image editing software.
Alongside this, students research and respond to the work of
early and current photographers.
At AS level students produce two units of work: Unit 1 - A Portfolio
of coursework selected from work created both in school and out
of school on photo-shoots. Images are created and selected in
response to a theme and demonstrate the range of skills acquired.
Unit 2—An externally set task. Students create images in response
to one of five exciting starting points introduced in February and
running until May. This includes the creation of a 5 hour timed
piece during one full day.
At A2, students complete Unit 3—a practical unit with written
elements to produce a personal investigation based on an idea,
issue, concept or theme leading to a final piece or pieces.
Unit 4 is an externally set task with a choice of seven starting
points introduced in February. The course ends with 15 hours of
supervised time to produce a finished piece or pieces.
AS coursework portfolio 50% and controlled test 50% of final
AS grade. A2 Unit 3 50% and controlled test 50% of A2 grade
(each unit 25% overall) Work at AS and A2 is marked against
four assessment criteria covering recording ideas; contextual
