Mathematics AS Level at Collingwood College

Course description

You will study a variety of units, following pathways to your desired qualification. Units may be combined in different ways to suit individual needs and abilities.

Core (Pure) Mathematics units cover: Algebra and Functions, Coordinate Geometry, Sequences and Series, Differentiation, Integration, Trigonometry, Exponentials and Logarithms, Numerical Methods, Vectors.

Applied Mathematics units can be chosen from the disciplines of Statistics or Decision Mathematics.

Statistics units cover: Mathematical Models in Probability and Statistics, Representation and Summary of Data, Probability, Correlation and Regression, Discrete Random Variables, Discrete Distributions, The Normal Distribution, The Binomial and Poisson Distributions, Continuous Random Variables, Continuous Distributions, Samples, Hypothesis Tests.

Decision Mathematics units cover: Algorithms, Algorithms on Graphs, The Route Inspection Problem, Critical Path Analysis, Matchings, Transportation Problems, Allocation Problems, Game Theory, Linear Programming.

Course content

The AS specification has 3 units:

Unit 1: Core 1 (C1)
Unit 2: Core 2 (C2)
Unit 3: Statistics 1 (S1)

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C (or equivalent) including grade B in Maths. Grade A or above at GCSE is highly recommended. Experience shows that students who achieve A grades and/or have strong algebraic skills are more likely to be successful. Students with B grades will be considered on an individual basis.

Assessment

All units: written examinations at the end of each year.
All exams are 1 hour 30 minutes long.
All units have equal weighting.
