Course description

AS YEAR: 1. Anatomy & Physiology. 2. Acquisition of Skill. 3. Contemporary Issues. A2 YEAR: 1. Exercise Physiology. 2. Sports Psychology. 3. Historical Issues.

Course content

A Level PE is for students who love the theoretical issues in sport. You will learn how the body’s skeletal, cardiovascular, muscular and respiratory systems affect performance. You will learn how gaining new skills affect old ones, how memory affects performance and how information processing can help performers in sport. You will learn how women, the media, sponsorship and drugs play a role in sporting performance.

Entry requirements

A grade B at GCSE is a must, with a B in the theory side (essential) or a Distinction at BTEC. A grade C in English, maths and science are also required.

Assessment

Year 12: 1 exam sat in the summer worth 60%. 2 sports and an observation/analysis talk worth 40%. Year 13: 1 exam sat in the summer worth 60% and 1 sport and an observation/analysis talk worth 40%.

Future opportunities

Most of our students go on to University and take degrees in: Sports management. Sport and Exercise Science. Sport & Recreation. Physiotherapy. Some gain work or do an apprenticeship.

Further information

You will be taught by: Powerpoint lessons. Researching an area using websites/text books. Class discussions on certain topics, e.g. cultural/ethical issues in sport. Acting out old historical concepts in sport, e.g. cock fighting. Producing your own powerpoints and presenting to the group.
