Art and Design Level 3 OCR at Bridgwater College

Course description

This course is for students who have a strong interest in Art and Design related areas who wish to study a broad-based course before specialising in a particular field. The 18 unit Diploma allows students to build a substantial portfolio with which to progress onto higher level courses. The Diploma is a nationally recognised qualification for those who are keen to pursue a career in Art and Design.

Course content

This course is an opportunity to gain new skills in Art and Design and also to acquire a high level of skill and knowledge in the area that you enjoy the most. The core skills of drawing, the study of historical and contemporary artists, exploring ideas and visual communication form the basis of your study whatever your specialism. At the end of the course you will compile a portfolio of work which will help provide access into higher education or employment and all students will participate in an end of year exhibition.

In the first year you will cover a broad range of practical Art and Design skills including:

  • Drawing
  • Art History
  • Photography
  • Fine Art 2D/3D
  • Fashion and Textiles
  • Graphic Design
  • Moving Image

In the second year you will be able to focus and specialise in specific areas of practice. Normally students select two specialisms in the second year.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs grades A* – C or an appropriate level 2 qualification. Evidence of creative work in a portfolio is beneficial.

Future opportunities

Most students progress onto higher education courses such as Fashion, Textiles, Interior design, Photography, Architecture, Game Design, Animation, Illustration, Graphic Design, Fine Art, Education, Set Design/Media Makeup/Costume Design or Applied Arts.

Some students progress to Creative Apprenticeships. Some examples of these are Graphic Design, Events Planning and Management, Manufacturing of Sewn Goods and Leather Goods production.

This course also prepares you for employment at junior level in areas such as: display, the clothing and fashion industry, graphic design, and community arts or events promotion.
