English at Outwood Academy Ripon

Course description

One Year (AS)

At AS, you will explore the fundamental structures and functions of writing, speech and conversation and understand how language functions in different social contexts.

Unit One: Categorising Texts
This unit is an introduction to the study of language, focussing on three specific social contexts: Language and Power, Language and Gender and Language and Technology.

Unit Two: Creating Texts
For this unit you use your creativity and writing skills to produce two pieces of original writing, each for a different purpose and audience. These are accompanied by two commentaries in which you explore your own writing process and assess the success of the pieces you have created.

Two Years (A2)

At A2, you will build on the knowledge and skills from AS to explore the nature and functions of language. You will focus on how language has changed and developed over time and how children learn language.
