Child Development BTEC at South Craven School, the Technology and Engineering College

Course description

Children's Play Learning and Development provides a work related programme. You complete coursework that combines your professional experience and your classroom learning and you will sit a short exam.
You will focus on the following areas:
  • Child Protection
  • Child Care Environments (including first aid)
  • Communicating and Developing Positive Relationships with children
  • Professional Skills Development
You will need a CRB check.

Each unit is assessed by pieces of coursework and you will build up a portfolio of work over the two years of the course. Coursework is examined both internally (by your teachers) and externally (by the exam board). One unit is assessed by external examination. You will need to pass all the units in order to pass the course.

Future opportunities

The qualification you will gain is recognised as equivalent to 1 A Level both for university admission and for those wishing to go directly into employment or vocational training. You can go on to higher education to study a variety of courses including early year, education and play work. Some students go on to complete apprenticeships in child care settings.
