Business Studies A level at Harris Academy Merton

Course description

The structure of the new A Level course has now changed, as the ‘AS’ course, is a standalone qualification.

This exciting new course is delivered in a way which allows students to study Business Studies in a holistic way.  Students will be introduced to ‘Business’ by using key business models, theories and techniques to support the analysis of contemporary business issues and situations.  The content of the course is designed to engage students through topics and issues that are relevant in today’s society which include key contemporary developments such as digital technology, business ethics, and globalisation.

Students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to analyse data, think critically about issues and make informed decisions – all skills that are needed for further study and employment.

Course content

AS level and A level:

[1] What is Business?

[2] Managers, leadership and decision making

[3] Decision making to improve marketing performance

[4] Decision making to improve operational performance

[5] Decision making to improve financial performance

[6] Decision making to improve human resource performance.

A level only:

[7] Analysing the strategic position of a Business

[8] Choosing strategic direction

[9] Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies

[10] Managing strategic change

Entry requirements

Standard Sixth Form Entry Requirements:

  • To study 4 A levels: must have average GCSE points score of 52+
  • To study 3 A levels: must have 7 A* - C grades in full course GCSE subjects
  • To study 3 A levels/vocational combination: must have 5 A* - C/9 - 4 grades at GCSE or Merit or above in Vocational subjects
  • To study vocational level 3 subjects: 5 A* - C/9 - 4 grades at GCSE or equivalent, with at least a merit/C/4 grade in a relevant vocational qualification or GCSE
  • Extended writing A level subject students will need a combination of at least grades 4 and 5 in English Language and English Literature

Subject specific requirements:

Students require grade B or above in English Language GCSE and Maths GCSE.  Successful completion of a GCSE Business related course is desirable.

Assessment

AS level:

Paper 1: written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes; All 6 topics are examined

  • Section A 10 multiple choice questions
  • Section B short answer questions
  • Section C two data response case studies with questions

80 marks in total; 50% of AS

Paper 2: written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes; All 6 topics are examined

  • one compulsory case study consisting of extended response questions

80 marks in total; 50% of AS

 

A level: 

Paper 1: written exam: 2 hours; All 10 topics are examined

  • Section A 15 multiple choice questions
  • Section B short answer questions
  • Section C two essay questions

100 marks in total; 33.3% of A level

Paper 2: written exam: 2 hours; All 10 topics are examined

  • three data response questions

100 marks in total; 33.3% of A level

Paper 3: written exam: 2 hours; All 10 topics are examined

  • case study & extended question responses

100 marks in total; 33.3% of A level
