Art A level at Valentines High School

Course description

The course is composed of two units.

Unit 1 is a Practical Project and written Personal Study. The written Personal Study is an illustrated dissertation of 1000 to 3000 words on a selected aspect of others’ art, craft and design.

Unit 2 is the externally set examination which involves demonstrating visual language skills in the same way as for AS. Students can choose to specialise and experiment in a variety of skills and disciplines including sculpture / 3D modelling, painting, illustration, digital manipulation, printmaking and photography.

Entry requirements

GCSE grade B in Art and Design.

Assessment

Unit 1 - the coursework unit contributes to 60% of the overall A-Level.

Unit 2 - the externally set assignment contributes 40% to the overall A-level. Both units are assessed by an external moderator.

Future opportunities

There are many careers in art, craft and design. Most require further study at an art college, further education or university. At present most students wishing to continue their studies go on to do a one year foundation course at Art College or apply straight to degree courses in more specialist areas of Art and Design. Careers that require studying Art and Design are advertising, creative director, architecture, publishing, media, web design, graphic design, engineering, fashion, set design, film, television, illustration and photography.
