Chemistry AS Level (OCR) at Ryburn Valley High School
Students may follow Advanced Supplementary (AS) or Advanced Award (A2) level in Chemistry.AS level the candidate must take 3 modules and A-level 6 modules. Candidates would complete AS during year 1 and A2 at the end of their second year of study.AS allows candidates to broaden their studies and defer decisions about specialism. It is designed to provide appropriate assessment of knowledge, understanding and skills expected of candidates who have completed the first half of a full Advanced level. The level of demand of the exam is that expected from candidates half way through a full A-level. To develop knowledge and understanding of concepts of chemistry and to produce skills to use in new and changing situations. The course provides a link between theory and experimental work. It also demonstrates how advances in IT and instrumentation are used in chemistry, as well as showing how the different areas of chemistry relate to each other.Candidates will gain an understanding of appreciation of the contributions of chemistry to society and the responsible use of scientific knowledge and evidence. They will also develop transferable skills, which will be useful whatever their chosen career.
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Chemistry, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses.With further training, you could go into a job related to Chemistry or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Pharmacist.You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
