Professional Food & Beverage Service C&G Level 2 VRQ Diploma at Grantham College

Course description

In addition to advanced craft skills the course also covers the following specific subjects:

  • Establishing and developing positive working relationships
  • Maintain food safety
  • Maintain the health, safety and security of the working environment

Training is undertaken in the College's Apple Tree restaurant. This formal restaurant is open to the public and provides realistic working environment for students to develop confidence and gain suitable experience. There is also supporting theory. Candidates will work with others at Levels 2 and 3, and may be requested to take on a supervisory role as part of their course, and guide others in their tasks. As a Level 2 student, you are expected to undertake an evening service session.

As part of this course, you are expected to take part in a minimum amount of work experience hours.

This course is suitable for those who are currently practitioners in the food industry or those wishing to improve their career prospects. At this level, the course offers the candidate the choice of general study or specialisation in various aspects of food preparation and cooking including:

  • Food Preparation and Cookery
  • Patisserie and Confectionary

Course content

Level 2 is a continuation of the level 1 qualification. This will reinforce and develop skills in restaurant operations with a view to progressing on to level 3.

Entry requirements

Candidates must successfully complete Level 1 before embarking upon Level 2. All applicants will be invited to an informal interview prior to starting the course and completion of a relevant course assignment.


VRQ qualifications are assessed via formal assessments and theoretical assignments. Practical skills are continually assessed in the college realistic working environment. Completed portfolios are assessed by College tutors and submitted to the External Verifier appointed by City & Guilds. The portfolio evidence is much more in depth than at the previous level and candidates should be well motivated and able to undertake research tasks.

Financial information

Full Time Further Education courses are free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.  Exam resit fees may apply if and when applicable.

Future opportunities

On completion of this programme, students will be fully prepared to take up either supervisory roles or work towards becoming a restaurant supervisor or, alternatively, study the level 3 programme.
