German A level at The Ecclesbourne School

Course description

A country of mountains, forests, fairytales, beautiful music, poets, philosophers, business, breweries, lederhosen, bratwurst and an intriguing history- what’s not to love? If you feel the same, then this is the course for you. A-level German helps you to develop confident, fluent communication skills in the German language and a thorough understanding of the amazing culture of the countries and communities where German is spoken. There are lots of opportunities to engage in areas of personal interest, such as films, literature, and cultural issues.

Units for AS will build on and extend familiar GCSE themes. The four main topics are Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living & Lifestyle and Family & Relationships. Units at A2 allow you to study two ‘cultural’ topics in depth. In recent years we have studied a German play (Dürrenmatt’s ‘Der Besuch der alten Dame’)and looked at
the history of East Germany and the Berlin Wall 1945-1990. You will also study topics of the Environment, the Multicultural Society and Current Social Issues.
