Physical Education *FEES PAYABLE* at Akeley Wood Senior School
This course will enhance knowledge and increase understanding of the factors that affect performance and participation in physical education. The qualification looks to equip students with skills and knowledge required for higher education or the world of work. Students are offered the opportunity to experience and develop an interest in a variety of roles in sport such as performer, official and/or leader/coach at AS and then be able to specialise in one at A2.
In the first year there are two main study topics. The first of these covers the beneficial effects of a healthy lifestyle and includes subjects like the physiological effects of exercise and how people acquire sports skills. In the second study topic you’ll learn how to analyse and evaluate an athlete’s performance, how to improve performance, and the factors affecting gaining new skills.
In the second year you’ll have two main study topics again. The first continues with the theme of optimising the performance of an athlete. This includes how physiology can improve performance for elite athletes, as well as studying the important topics within sport today. The second study topic looks at performance in competitive situations. This includes theobservation and analysis of weaknesses, along with ways of correcting any errors for the performer.
As both the AS and A2 elements of the course followed at Akeley are a mix of theory and practical ability, it is highly recommended that you have studied PE at GCSE, and have a good understanding of the theory studied at that level at least to a ‘B’ grade. You should have a keen interest in how the body functions during activity, in the origins of sport and PE as well as current issues and trends in the sporting arena. It would also be expected that you would have represented the school in at least one sport.
