Theatre Studies AS Level at West Kirby Grammar School

Course description

WHY CHOOSE THEATRE STUDIES?

This is an exciting course that offers opportunities for students to balance a theoretical approach with practical work. Students will be able to pursue particular skills/interest such as performance, direction, costume, mask work or set design.

Course content

CONTENT - Advanced Subsidiary Level

Unit 1: Live Theatre - Production Seen and Prescribed Play.

Unit 2: Presentation of an Extract from an existing play.

Group performance of an extract - take on one of the following roles: - actor, director, set design, costume design, lighting/sound technician or mask design. Supported by a portfolio of notes to record the process.

Entry requirements

AS Level

  • Entry onto AS courses is conditional on you achieving at least five B grades at GCSE Level which must include the subjects you intend to study
  • If you are starting a new subject at AS Level such as Psychology or Film Studies you must achieve a B grade in a related subject at GCSE Level such as Science or English
  • All students must also achieve at least a C grade in Mathematics and English Language

Assessment

ASSESSMENT

Unit 1: Externally set written paper - 1 hour 30 minutes (60% of total AS marks, 30% of total A level marks. Out of 100)

Unit 2: Internally assessed (40% of total AS marks, 20% of total A level marks. Out of 80)

WHAT CAN I DO WITH THEATRE STUDIES?

Creative industries is one of the largest growth areas for employment. Theatre Studies can help to provide the skills that are required by many of these employers. It is a demanding course for anyone who has a keen interest in Drama and Theatre. For students who wish to pursue English, Drama, Performance, Media or Communication at University or Drama School, this course would be of immense value.

WHAT DO I NEED TO START THE COURSE?

You will need to have an interest in some aspect of drama or theatre. Studying Drama at GCSE would be useful but it is not a necessity. It is more important that you are willing to work hard, attend workshops and performances and be able to share ideas with others. You will be required to work as a member of a group but also need to be self-motivated when working alone.
