Course content

AS (Year 12)
Students will be externally assessed through 2 written exams. They will study the following two units:
Unit 1: Global Challenges
Within this unit students will study the causes, impacts and management of global challenges. It also provides students with the opportunity to consider how we can respond to global challenges and move towards a more sustainable future.
Unit 2: Geographical Investigation
This gives students an opportunity to undertake geographical research. Fieldwork will form part of the teaching of this unit.
You will investigate two topics in depth, one of Extreme Weather or Crowded Coasts (physical geography), and one of Unequal Spaces or Rebranding Places (human geography).

Entry requirements

Students studying this course will require good grades in English, Maths and Geography (at least a C Grade). There are no additional entry requirements for AS Level Geography above the College’s general entry conditions. Students will, however, benefit from having an interest in the world around you, be it curiosity about how a landscape has formed, or an interest in how a community might be affected by transnational corporations. You need to be prepared to leave the classroom and see for yourself what is going on!

Assessment

You will be assessed through 4 external examinations over the course of the two years. Students will sit 2 examinations in May of the first year, completing their AS course and 2 examinations in June of the second year, attaining their A2 qualification.

Future opportunities

A Level Geography is required for a number of careers, including, but not limited to, research, science-based careers and environmental-based careers. Having a Geography A Level can be advantageous when applying for jobs in a variety of sectors, including environment and sustainability, physical systems, society, business, geographical techniques, development and global issues, settlement and travel, tourism, leisure and culture.
A Level Geography gives you a great knowledge into how things in the world function and work, on both a manmade and natural level, therefore having A Level Geography is very desirable. A huge range of universities require A Level Geography for their degree programmes, including Earth Sciences, Geography, Geology, Archaeology, Oceanography, Leisure and Tourism, amongst others.
