Course description

Are you fascinated by how things work?

By studying Chemistry A-level you will learn what particles are like and how they behave.

You will investigate reactions and explain them in terms of changes in atomic structure, arrangement and energy.

You will see how every chemical interaction in the world is governed by just a few key ideas, and apply your knowledge of them to predict if and when reactions will take place.

Studying Chemistry is not just about chemicals, but demonstrates your skill in problem solving and working with evidence.

Entry requirements

GCSE Chemistry with at least a grade B or Double Award (Science and Additional Science) with at least a grade B.


The Chemistry specification is designed to be synoptic in nature, reflected by the requirement for students to sit synoptic papers covering the breadth and depth of the subject. 

Practical skills are assessed both within the written exams and also continually for the separate Practical Endorsement.

Future opportunities

Chemistry is a key course that opens doors to higher education possibilities.

Possible courses include; Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Earth Science, Environmental Science and Forensics.

It is also a well-respected course to support applications for any subject as it demonstrates a wide range of transferrable skills.
