Mathematics at Washwood Heath Academy

Course description

There are three strands that all AS/A Level students willstudy: Core (Pure Mathematics), plus two from either Statistics,Decision and Mechanics. Core includes trigonometricfunctions, coordinate geometry and calculus. Statistics looks athow data can be collected and analysed, with strong links tobiology, sociology and psychology.Decision introduces the idea ofalgorithms and mathematical programming – similar to thoseused in business. Mechanics studies the application ofmathematics and mathematical models applied to moving objectsand the forces, with links to physics and engineering.

Entry requirements

You will need a grade B at GCSE Mathematics to begin the course. To continue to Year 13, you will need to achieve at least a grade C at AS Level in year 12.

Assessment

Mathematics at Advanced Level is run on a modular system. Every group of three modules passed forms a qualification. Three modules form an AS Level and six modules achieve an A Level. Further bundles of three modules go towards Further Mathematics AS or A Levels. All modules are assessed by an exam.

Future opportunities

Mathematics is a very valuable A Level by itself and a keyrequirement for many University courses such as Accounting,Finance, Engineering, Sciences and any degrees that need research.
