Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship Intermediate Level 2 at Southampton City College

Course description

This apprenticeship is suitable for you if you want to start a career or develop your existing skills in mechanical engineering.  As a mechanical engineering apprentice you will develop your engineering skills, knowledge and practical experience by working with machine tools, centre lathes and milling machines.

Course content

You will develop hand fitting skills by producing a number of practical components, understand engineering materials and technical drawings and be able to communicate technical information effectively. As a mechanical engineer you would be involved in the creation and design of advances in mechanical equipment, machine components or even the tools used to create them. You will also be involved in the repair of products as well as ensuring a high level of quality assurance through inspection and testing.

Entry requirements

No previous qualifications are required and a full assessment will take place to ensure you have the skills to complete the qualification. Those wishing to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship will require GCSE’s A*-C in English and maths (or equivalent) or demonstrate, through the assessment process, that you are able to achieve this.


As an apprentice you can expect to undertake work based learning with an employer and to be paid a wage. The apprenticeship will include an NVQ diploma, functional skills and knowledge based element or technical certificate.
