Combined Fitness, Public Services and Sport Diploma Level 1 at PETROC

Course description

You're keen to pursue a sport-related career, perhaps you have an eye on the public services, but you're not sure which path to follow. This highly vocational course can put you on exactly the right track and help you make informed decisions about your future.

Course content

This course enables you to explore the different vocational paths that sport, fitness and public services can offer. By widening your knowledge, you will be in a strong position to make a smart, informed career choice.

The study programme covers units in practical teamwork, taking part in sports, job opportunities in sport and leisure, how the body works, exercise and fitness and public service careers. You will also cover self assessment, career progression and take part in an expedition, developing your navigation skills. There will be a number of trips and practical activities throughout the year such as visits to professional sports clubs and private gym facilities, outdoor activities such as surfing, wakeboarding and climbing as well as teambuilding activities with the Army and Royal Marines.

You will be able to improve your functional skills in English and maths. You will also take part in our work experience programme, supporting your studies and gaining you real career experience.

Entry requirements

All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade E/2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English Language. 

At the end of the one-year programme all learners are expected to have achieved GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language at grade 4, or show that they have been working towards improving their English and Maths by achieving an improvement to their previous grade.

This course is for people with a real commitment to pursue a career and gain further qualifications.


You must pass all the units to gain this diploma. To pass each unit you will produce a portfolio of evidence including a range of written assignment work, presentations, project work, group work and practical-based assessments.

Future opportunities

You can progress to the BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Sport or Level 2 Diploma in Public Services or the CYQ Level 2 Diploma in Fitness, Exercise and Health, or go on to do other further education courses at Petroc.

Further information

Practical sessions will take place in the college Gym, Sports Hall and Studio, alternatively off site venues may be used. Classrooms will be at the main Barnstaple campus.
