AS and A2 Level Product Design at William Farr CofE Comprehensive School
In Product Design we aim to help you develop your own individual creativity to its full potential. Our course allows you to meet your unique set of needs and abilities, whilst ensuring you are set the highest expectations that will challenge you. You are encouraged to think, question and enquire. Product Design is not just about “doing” but is about interactively thinking and doing. Solutions are not always as obvious as you may think. So if you are committed, enthusiastic and prepared to listen and learn, you may want to consider studying Product Design.
Product Design combines theory with practice. This is a problem-solving subject that uses not just the brain, not just the hands but combines both. This subject also combines academic study with design skills and practical application.
Coursework in Year 12 consists of an e-Portfolio which documents the design and manufacture of three projects including architecture, lighting and a clock over three lessons. Two lessons per week are focussed on materials technology taught through theory and practical sessions in our workshops.
In Year 13 students will continue to develop a body of coursework alongside an understanding of the processes and procedures of commercial production and manufacture. Products in previous years have included desks, coffee tables, garden furniture, picnic tables, desk and ceiling lighting and an 18ft canoe.
Over the last few years we have built up links with Universities including Lincoln, Loughborough, Sheffield Hallam and Nottingham Trent, to enhance and support learning.
We visit Mini (Oxford) and Jaguar (Coventry) to build on our work on systems, materials and processes which is needed for your exams. We also take a two day trip to London in Year 12. In Year 13 we have taken a bi-annual trip to New York jointly with Art and Design. In the interim year we hope to visit a European city.
Students who intend to go onto Engineering should be encouraged to take Maths and/or Physics alongside Product Design.
We advise you only take two subjects from Art & Design, and Design & Technology, which includes Art, Electronics, Fashion Design & Textiles, Graphic Design, Photography/Lens Based Design, Product Design.
GCSE grade B in a Design and Technology subject.
Successful students have gone on to take BA and BSc degrees in Product Design and Engineering at Universities including Sheffield Hallam, Nottingham Trent, Leeds Met, Loughborough and Brunel.
