Art & Design A Level at Liskeard School and Community College

Course description

This qualification encourages a personal, explorative and academically investigative and enquiring approach to Art and Design.

The qualification aims to develop in all students:

  • Academic, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers through investigation, analysis, experimentation, practical exploration, technical skill development, and expressive interpretation and communication, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement.
  • An understanding of the interrelationships between art and design, and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate.
  • Knowledge and understanding of art and design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.

Course content

Students may provide evidence of practical work in a number of different areas or specialise in a more focussed discipline; drawing, painting, mixed media, ICT and image manipulation, sculpture, graphic design, printmaking, and ceramic sculpture.

There is a mandatory requirement that all students keep work journals for their projects. These journals are a visual diary in which students record the development of ideas, illustrating skilled judgements, understanding and development using appropriate visual, verbal and literary skills. These judgements will necessarily include critical and historical academic reference to the work of other artists.

Visits to local, National and European Galleries and Museums may be made to encourage students to use the work of others to support and develop their own ideas and practical work. Every effort will be made to ensure that students are given the opportunity to work with a visiting artist.

These courses are ideal for a student wishing to develop creative thinking. The theoretical skills learnt will enable them to set their own thinking within a wider historical and cultural context. Practical skill will enable students to communicate their thinking to a wider audience and also to prepare them for future progression

Assessment

There are four assessment objectives within Art and Design.

  • Development of ideas demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
  • Experimentation, selection and refinement in the application of materials, process and techniques.
  • Recording observations, insights, intentions, evaluations and reflections.
  • Presenting a final response demonstrating critical and contextual understanding.

Future opportunities

Past students, wishing to work within the creative arts industry, have progressed on to study specialist courses at National Diploma, Higher National Diploma, Foundation and Degree Level. However, the A/S and A2 qualification in Art and Design is an excellent creative platform for students wishing to enter further and higher education in all fields of study.
