Business (Level 3) at Central College Nottingham

Course description

This is a full-time practical, work-related course. By completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands, you will learn about the business world. There are approximately 18 units on the Extended Diploma programme and you will study half of the units each year.

  • Functional Skills in English and Maths

English and Maths are an essential part of your studies and will help you succeed on your course. These subjects will help you develop confidence and are the key employability skills that all employers now look for when recruiting.

Entry requirements

One of the following:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language and Maths*
  • A relevant Level 2 qualification at a Merit grade including GCSE English Language and Maths* at grade A*-C

*If you do not have both GCSE English Language and Maths at A*-C, we may accept one of them at Grade D in addition to your 5 GCSEs at A*-C. Functional Skills may be accepted instead of GCSE English and/or Maths. Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE Grade D and Level 2 to GCSE Grade C.

Adults who are aged 19+ with relevant industry experience but without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.


There are externally assessed exams and assignments including making presentations, reports, poster presentations and role play.

You may progress onto Higher Education programmes including:

  • Foundation Degree
  • Higher National Certificate / Diploma
  • Degree in Business
  • Industry based employment

An Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels. Your predicted GCSE grades or achieved grades will affect whether you are offered a place on the Extended Diploma. It is recommended that you have paper, pens, calculator, a recommended subject text book and a memory stick for transferring your work from home to college.
