Construction - Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry at Wakefield College

Course description

If you have some experience of site carpentry or hold a Level 1 qualification in the subject, this course will enable you to build on your knowledge and skills. This is a practical programme allowing you to benefit from the experience of specialist tutors with a wealth of industry know-how and the facilities at our purpose-built Castleford Campus.

Course content

What you will study



 

A series of units covering the theory and practice of the following topics:

* Carry out first fixing operations

* Carry out maintenance to non-structural carpentry work

* Carry out second fixing operations

* Carry out structural carcassing operations

* Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries

* Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools

* Understanding construction technology

* Understanding information, quantities and communication with others

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C.  This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

Your Course Structure

Classroom: 45%; Practical: 55%

How you will learn

The college workshops will enable you to develop your practical skills in this subject area. The theory linked to site carpentry is delivered through class room sessions where you will learn through a range of tutor led sessions, activities and study packages. All learning packages are installed on Moodle to support on line working.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grade A*-D (new grade 9-3)

AND
A suitable L1 Site Carpentry qualification

Assessment

Continuous assessment throughout the course of practical workshop tasks. Subject knowledge is assessed by means of  final single exam. Final assessment of the practical element of the course is by means of a series of Synoptic Practical Assignments.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residential etc. which are payable by all students.

Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Further study

This qualification will enable you to progress in Site Carpentry and on completion of this qualification, progress into employment in their chosen trade or on to one of the following qualifications:
- Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.


      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
