Course description

BTEC level 3 Applied Science is aimed at students who want to develop their skills in Science, in preparation for progression into employment or higher education. It is a suitable qualification for students who have studied GCSEor BTEC Level 2 in Applied Science .The topics covered will include the fundamentals of science, working in science and a range of practical techniques.

Entry requirements

CC in Science and C in Maths, plus a minimum GCSE average of 5.0 from at least 5 GCSE's or Merits in at least 75% of BTECs taken

Assessment

Assessment is through teacher-assessed coursework portfolios, a combination of written and practical research, one externally assessed unit, and some external exams.

Financial information

There may be small additional costs related to visits. There will be at least one compulsory visit to a scientific establishment

Future opportunities

This would provide a good foundation for progression directly into employment or to higher education to follow a science related course, such as Forensic Science, or a medical related course such as nursing or occupational therapy, alongside other appropriate Level 3 qualifications. It would be particularly appropriate for students looking to work in a laboratory environment.

Further information

It is a very practically based subject, which is entirely assessed through assignments as well as an examination. Good organisation skills are very important. Students preferring an all examination approach to assessment should consider separate science A Levels as an alternative (entry requirements apply).
