Horticulture Level 2 Diploma at Oaklands College

Course description

The course will be 1 year in duration (35 weeks of learning). The course will cover a wide range of subjects including, soil and plant science, plant propagation, surveying, plant identification, establishment and maintenance of plants, site plans and hard landscaping.

Course content

The course is both practical and accademic in nature and its purpose is to provide centre-based provision designed for people who may want to progress further with college education and/or employment in the horticultural sector (e.g. gardener, landscaper, nursery worker, groundsman, golf greenkeeper etc) you will learn about the application of health and safety in the workplace, general horticulture aspects such as plant establishment and maintenance, plant and soil science, propagation, lawn care and the use and care of tools and machinery used in the industry. In addition all learners will have to carry out a mandatory unit that requires them to undertake work related experience in a land-based Industry.

Entry requirements

You should have 4 GCSEs at grades A to D including Maths and English, or be able to demonstrate you are working at this level both on an Academic and Practical level. You should also have a strong interest in horticulture as a subject. All applications are subject to an interview and successful completion of BKSB Initial Assessment at a suitable level.

The qualification is aimed at students who wish to develop a career path within the Horticulture Industry. You should have a general interest in horticulture with an aspiration to work in a industry sector that has many and varied opportunities such as landscape gardening, garden design, garden construction and maintenance.


For the Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture candidates must complete core units plus the required optional units. Every unit is assessed through written assignments and practical assessments. These tasks are set by NPTC, and marked internally by the centre.

Financial information

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

Future opportunities

Learners who complete the Diploma will be able to progress onto a higher level course at another provider or start a career in a horticulture trade.
