Course description

Year 1

In the fi rst year (AS) you’ll have two main areas of study:

Understanding Dance and Choreography and Performance. Both are designed to get you on your feet dancing solo and with others. Your coursework will include physical, interpretative and performance skills.

Unit 1: Theory written paper based on safe practice, choreography, performance, fi ve professional works set by the teacher.

Unit 2: Solo choreography moderated by AQA and set examination questions based on choreography. Performance in a duo or trio choreographed by students in collaboration with the teacher, moderated by AQA.

Year 2

In the second year there will be a set work to study, chosen from three professional dance pieces. This area of study, called ‘Group choreography and solo performance’ includes your very own performance in the style of one of the three genres. The second year assessment is in two parts.

Unit 3: Theory examination based on an area of study set by AQA, essay based examination questions.

Unit 4: Group choreography, questions set by AQA. Candidates choreograph work using younger dancers. Solo performance based on a practitioner drawn from the area of study in unit 3.

Entry requirements

5 A*-C GCSEs and a grade B in GCSE dance. Graded dance examinations or equivalent help but are not essential.
