Course description

The course is aimed at students who have a commitment to the idea that religion and religious belief motivate people to make significantdecisions in their lives. These decisions are not made arbitrarily but usually according to a mode of decision-making advocated by thereligious community to which they belong. The student should have an interest in the analysis of these decision-making processes and be able to make a critique of them. Students who are interested in the challenge of philosophical enquiry, will enjoy this course. Religious beliefs and practice are not beyond intellectual scrutiny and can actually develop as a result of the process.

At the end of year 13, students will sit  3 exams all worth 33% of their final mark. The units are: Philosophy, Ethics and Christianity. The course allows students to study philosophy and ethics through a variety methods, including student lead discussion and research tasks.  This GCE is 100% examination. Progress to A2 is dependent upon successful completion of year 12, asessesed through 2 Mock exams. this course will help prepare you for higher education or may be useful incareers related to religious, moral or ethical concepts such as a SocialWorker or Counselling. A2 Philosophy and Ethics is a recognisedqualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding andknowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for,especially in sectors where people are the main focus.

Entry requirements

The standard entry criteria to study in the sixth form is an 9-4 or A*-C in at least seven different subjects, including mathematics which would usually be at grade 4 or above (equivalent to grade C in previous years).

 

To study other subjects already taken at GCSE you must achieve  at least a grade 5 or C grade or above in that subject.
