English Language and Literature AS Level at Churchmead Church of England School

Course description

Our A Level courses are offered as a full programme of study, with most students taking either three or four AS level subjects in their first year. When applying for an A Level programme, you will be asked to enter a minimum of three and a maximum of four AS subjects at the application stage. Your course interview will give you the opportunity to discuss your choices in detail with a member of the academic studies team and make changes to your programme once you have received advice and guidance.

Do you enjoy all aspects of English, including learning how people communicate both in speaking and writing? Are you looking for a balanced course where you can analyse spoken language, journalism, biography and travel writing, as well as literary works.

This course introduces you to all forms of writing and speaking, and will encourage your understanding of various aspects of communication.

This course is modular and follows the Edexcel syllabus. The AS consists of two units. Unit 1 introduces you to the study of spoken language and the voice in texts. It teaches you a new range of terminology. Unit 2 is a coursework option which requires the study of a selection of texts and these become the basis of your own pieces of writing.

There is an entry requirement of five GCSEs at grade C and above, including English Language.

The course is delivered through classroom- based activities, lectures and seminars with particular emphasis on class discussion and shared ideas on texts. Independent student study is also required.
