Biology at Calder High School

Course description

Biology is the scientific exploration of the vast and diverse world of living organisms; an exploration that has expanded enormously within the last four decades revealing a wealth of knowledge about ourselves and about the millions of other organisms with whom we share this planet Earth. Today, biological research, worldwide, spans an almost infinite spectrum of studies from molecules to landscapes.

Course content

AS

Cells, Exchange & Transport: Cell structure and function and exchange and transport across membranes

Molecules, Biodiversity, Food & Health: Biological molecules, enzymes, Biodiversity,

classification, variation and human interactions

Practical Skills in Biology: Coursework unit involving internal assessment of coursework skills

A2

Communication, Homeostasis & Energy: Photosynthesis, respiration, homeostasis, nerves and communication

Control, Genomes & the Environment: Cellular control, biotechnology ecosystems and sustainability

Practical Skills in Biology: Coursework unit involving internal assessment of coursework skills

Entry requirements

B in core Science (Higher Tier) and B in Additional Science (Higher Tier) not Additional

Applied or Dual Award Applied Science

OR B in GCSE Biology (Higher Tier)

B in GCSE Mathematics is desirable

High motivation with an aptitude for problem solving & decision making
