Science (Single Award) - GCSE Biology at Longley Park Sixth Form College

Course description

You will build on the biological science you studied at School.

This is a very hands on subject and you will take part in practical work and a field trip.  Your study will involve some dissection of biological material.

Course content

There are 10 required practicals that all studentsmust carry out and these will take place during lesson time.

The course covers 7 areas of biology:

  • Cell biology
  • Organisation of tissues, organs and organ systems
  • Infection and response
  • Energy in plants and animals
  • Homeostasis and response
  • Inheritance, variations and evaluation
  • Ecology

 

A number of specifications will be changing and prospectus entries are based on information we have to date. This means that course content may be subject to change.

Entry requirements

You should have the equivalent of a GCSE grade 2/E or better in Single or Dual Science, Applied Science or Biology and also in Maths.

Assessment

Two examinations at the end of the course.

Financial information

Everything you must have to undertake the course will be provided by college.  You may have to pay for extras such as trips/visits.

Future opportunities

This is an ideal course for students interested in going on to health and care related courses and careers, sports related courses and careers in teaching.  Some students will take the GCSE Biology course alongside Level 3 courses to help them with their main programme.
