Course description

Psychology is defined as the ‘scientific study of behaviour’. Psychologists aim to describe, explain, predict and even control behaviour. Psychology is real, it is not about common sense or myths, therefore everything that is covered during A level psychology can be applied to real life. Because of this, it is a great subject to have knowledge of, whatever career path you may decide to go down. Some famous studies that you will cover as part of the course include Pavlov’s dogs, Milgrams study of obedience and the infamous Stanford prison experiment to name a few.

Course content

AS Psychology: • Unit 1 – Cognitive and developmental psychology and research methods • Unit 2 – Biological psychology, social psychology and individual differences A2 Psychology: • Unit 3: Eating behaviour, aggression and relationships (amongst other topics) Unit 4: Psychopathology, addictive behaviour and advanced research methods.

Entry requirements

If you have taken GCSE psychology you should have achieved at least a grade C. If not, at least a B grade in English Maths or Science is necessary.


Year 12: 100% Exam – 2 x 1hr 30 minute papers Year 13:100% exam – 1 1hr 30 min paper, one 2hr paper

With psychology looking at human behaviour it can be helpful/relevant for ANY chosen career, but some that you might think about include: • Psychology teacher • Research psychologist • Occupational psychologist • Educational psychologist • Forensic Psychologist • Health psychologist • Counselling

Further information

You will learn about relevant theories from a number of different psychological approaches including the biological, behavioural, psychodynamic and cognitive approaches. This is done by looking at and carrying out research studies, through individual research as well as small group activities and presentations. There is NO coursework at either AS or A2 level psychology, but homework will be set regularly and may include practice exam questions, research projects and background reading amongst other things.
