Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (Light Vehicle) Level 2 Apprenticeship at Kendal College

Course description

Apprenticeships allow you to gain qualifications whilst working - you will normally study one day per week in college and spend the rest of the week at work, usually at least 30 hours per week.

The Intermediate Apprenticeship covers subjects such as the servicing and repair of motor vehicles, braking systems, lighting systems, suspension systems,  steering systems, electrical systems, basic motor vehicle engineering skills and industrial skills.

Course content

Apprentices study related NVQs, Technical Certificates and Functional Skills. During the course you will develop your theoretical knowledge, as well as skills in the workplace.

The Apprenticeship will cover such topics as

1. Maintenance

2. Electrical Systems

3. Driveline

4. Chassis - steering, braking & suspension

5. Engine - internal & external

Entry requirements

Level 2 programmes require four GCSEs at A*-D including English and Maths or a science subject; Level 3 requires four GCSEs at A*-C including English and Maths or a science subject.

Progression from one level to another is subject to successful completion of your course including key/functional skills and a tutor reference. Direct entrants must have the relevant GCSE profile or equivalent or trade experience. All applicants will require an interview with the course tutor and in some cases, a trade test.

Assessment

Assessment will be undertaken on a range of performance knowledge-based tasks, both in the College’s real work environment and on site. You will require a high volume of evidence from the workplace, in particular, the diagnostic module, and will sit 5 online exams.

As part of the apprenticeship framework, reviews are completed every 12 weeks by the assessor where progress is discussed by the apprentice, assessor and employer.

Completion of the Apprenticeship can lead to the Advanced Apprenticeship.

Recognition of your qualifications by employers can lead to rapid career development in the workplace. The Advanced Apprenticeship can lead on to Higher Education.

    • The majority of our courses are based at our main site. The College completed a £12.9 million new build project in 2008, which includes reception, conference and seminar suites, hairdressing salons and 250-seat cafe with external balcony. The site also features the stunning Construction and Heritage Centre, which features cutting edge facilities for carpentry and joinery, brickwork, plumbing and electrical installation.

      In October 2010 the College opened the South Lakeland Design Engineering Centre, which has brought engineering back to Kendal College. The Centre, designed in conjunction with local engineering firms including Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Limited, features state of the art computer numerical control (CNC) machinery, including a 3D printer, which prints out solid models directly from CAD Drawings. The college is currently building a new, purpose-built engineering centre which will open in September 2014 and provide new courses in medical science, engineering and sustainable energy.
