Course description

This is a one year course that develops skills in the field of accountancy, payroll and finance. It offers students the opportunity to gain the skills demanded by employer while achieving a national recognised qualification. The programme of study is made up of two qualifications.

The Accounting and Payroll qualification is awarded by AAT, Association of Accounting Technicians. It is a Level 2 qualification. This introductory level is where you'll get to develop your skills in finance administration: double-entry bookkeeping, basic costing principles, computerised accounting and payroll.

The finance qualification is awarded by IFS, Institute of Financial Services. This Level 3 qualification develops knowledge and understanding of the financial services sector and enhances skills that are valued within that sector and others. It develops the knowledge and skills required for young people to make informed financial decisions by introducing them to the risks and challenges involved in personal finance and to tools for effective planning.

- Processing Bookkeeping 
- Control Accounts, Journals and Banking System 
- Basic Costing
- Working Effectively in Accounting & Finance
- Computerised Accounting 

- Payroll:
- Introduction to Payroll System 
- Computerised Payroll System

- Business:
- Applied Business Communication and Personal Skills
- Spreadsheet Software

- Finance:
- Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short
- Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term

- Students who do not have a GCSE at grade C in English will be required to continue to study this subject.

Entry requirements

- 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C including Maths
- Minimum of a GCSE grade D in English

Assessment

Each unit of study is assessed by the means of an online exam. These are set by the Association of Accounting Technicians and the Institute of Financial Services.

There are regular tutorials and feedback sessions with tutors to ensure that individuals are progressing with their studies without problems.

GCSE subjects will have a formal exam.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this one year course allows for progression on to the part-time Level 3 AAT courses for those wishing to follow an accountancy route, or onto the full-time Level 3 Business course for those wishing to generalise; ultimately, leading to Higher Education courses, HND, degrees and Chartered Accountancy professional membership exams.
For those students wishing to progress to Level 3 AAT it is advisable to combine this course with employment in the sector.
