Further Mathematics A Level at St Joseph's Catholic Academy
Students follow the Edexcel syllabus in both Year 12 and Year 13.
They will study 6 units in Year 12; 3 AS Mathematics units and 3 AS Further Mathematics units.
In Year 13, students will study a further 6 units; 3 A2 Mathematics units and 3 A2 Further Mathematics units.
The Lower 6 course comprises 6 units of study, which are 3 AS Maths units and 3 AS Further Maths units. This will lead to the award of AS in Maths and AS in Further Maths by the end of Year 12. AS Maths units are: Core 1, Core 2, Decision Maths 1 AS Further Maths units are: Further Pure 1, Statistics 1, Mechanics 1
All AS units are assessed by external examination in the summer of Year 12
The A2 comprises a further 6 units of study, leading to the award of A2 Mathematics and A2 Further Mathematics by the end of Year 13. A2 Maths units are: Core 3, Core 4, Mechanics 2 A2 Further Maths units are: Further Pure 2, Further Pure 3, Statistics 2
All A2 units are assessed by external examination in the summer of Year 13
Grade A in GCSE Maths.
Exam for each unit.
Further Maths is a desirable A level for those students wishing to further their study of Mathematicallybased subjects at university. Leeds University states: “Take an AS in Further Maths – and be well prepared for University! The extra modules of pure maths and mechanics will prove invaluable for mathematics, physics or engineering”.
