Geography A Level at Wirral Grammar School for Girls
The content of unit 1 of the AS Geography course is divided into 2 sections – Physical and Human Geography. In Physical Geography you will complete a compulsory Rivers and Flood management unit, which involves studying the central role of water in the development of different landscapes and the management of water as a resource for human welfare purposes. You will then study coastal environments), focussing on physical processes and environmental management. In Human Geography you will study a compulsory global population unit, learning how population has changed over time and space and the geographical implications of this change. You will then study the Geography of health, focussing on human welfare and sustainability.
Unit 2 (Applied Geography)
This unit will help you to develop your investigative and practical skills. You will learn new skills for presenting and analysing geographical data and you will be given the opportunity to apply these skills using both fieldwork and also the knowledge and understanding you have gained from Unit 1. To support your learning the Department runs a 3 day field course in the Lake District with the Geography Department of Wirral Grammar School for Boys.
The A2 Geography course adopts an issues approach, which is particularly relevant to the world you are going to live and work in.
In Unit 3 you will study both Physical and Human Geography topics, including plate tectonics and associated hazards, weather and climate and world cities.
This unit is similar to Unit 2 in that you will be examined on another piece of fieldwork that you have completed, with a focus on evaluation.
