Course description

This is a study of where the human and physical worlds interact. We try and make sense of patterns and reasons for changes. This course is delivered jointly by Queensbury School and Thornton Grammar.

AS Geography

Unit 1 Global Challenges

In this section you study two compulsory topics: World at risk and Going global.

Exam 1hr 30mins

World at risk: includes an introduction to a range of global natural hazards which threaten some areas of the world more than others and then focuses on climate change and global warming, seen by many as our greatest environmental challenge.

Going Global: brings together todays rapid economic changes which are impacting unfairly on people across the globe, and the related international issues of population change and migration.

Unit 2 Geographical Investigations

This is a closer look at how physical and human issues influence lives and can be managed. You must choose two topics from the four offered in this unit, these must be one physical and one human topic. It is likely we will do extreme weather and rebranding of places.

Exam 1hr

Extreme Weather: with its increasing ferocity and frequency fascinates some people and threatens manyothers.

Rebranding Places : focuses on how we need to re-image and regenerate rural and urban places, using appropriate strategies.

You will have the opportunity to go on a number of fieldtrips in year 12.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of 5 A*-C grades (or equivalent) in your GCSEs, including at least a gradeC in English and a grade Cin the related subject.

To progress onto the second year, you need to gain at least a pass grade from the first year.


Assessment is through a combination of modular examinations and coursework.

Future opportunities

Many and varied due to a wide variety of skills - media, tourism, marketing, surveying, civil engineering, transport studies, management or administration.
