EDEXCEL BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (QCF)
The course runs over two years and the Subsidiary Diploma will cover 6 units and the Diploma will cover 12 units.
In the first term students will take part in an induction programme that aims to show an overview of the course and what they will study, study skills including the skills of essay writing and the differences between what is require for a pass, merit or distinction piece of work.
Both groups will study the core units of the course over the duration of the first two terms. These include Effective Communication, Equality and Diversity and Health and Safety. During the second term students will continue with specialist units for the Subsidiary diploma these may include Psychological Perspectives in Health and Social Care and Sociological Perspective in Health and Social Care. These aim to look at how health and social care practices use psychological interventions to support people as well as how patterns of health can help to intervene in health and social care provisions.
Students studying the Diploma course are required to study Unit 6: Personal and Professional Development. This requires students to learn about how to develop personally and professionally with an emphasis on setting goals to achieve whilst on work experience placements.
In Year 13 students will continue to study a range of topics including Development through the life stages and Caring for young people. These particular topics focus on how people develop and the impact of genetics and the environment can have on physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. This focuses on real life stories and case studies where students will develop their analytical and evaluative skills. Students will also learn about the process of safeguarding, including the policies and procedures to follow if a young person is at risk.
The second term students will study Unit 11: Caring for vulnerable adults. This looks at the different types of abuse and neglect that older people face and what policies and procedures are set up to reduce these risks. Students will need to develop their empathy skill, understand the complex needs that older people face and how to care for the elderly.
During the final term students will complete their final units including Research Methods and Anatomy and Physiology.
Students studying the Diploma course are required to research an area of interest in health and social care. Students must create and use a tool of methodology and conduct their own primary research, present and analyse their finding and evaluate their study in relation to how to make further improvements.
