Physics A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Eastbourne College

Course description

Physics is a fundamental branch of Science because its principles form the foundation of other branches of Science. For example the conservation of energy is a key principle of Physics that provides the starting point in explaining a wide range of studies from atomic bonding to weather forecasting; the study of electricity is used both theoretically and practically to explain electrode potentials in Chemistry and the flow of nerve impulses in Medicine. The modules of the course develop ideas studied in GCSE Core Science and Additional Science, e.g. mechanics, electricity, waves, radioactivity etc., and take them slightly higher.

Course content

Although the study of Physics at AS does prepare you for the study of engineering and other Physical Sciences at University, it does provide a good basis in logical and practical thinking. As such it is a very marketable qualification and is accepted for a whole range of non-scientific courses from accountancy to law. Medics find AS Physics very useful in understanding some of the scientific aspects of their course, and it is expected that the skills you learn will stand you in good stead for the 21st century.

You will sit two written papers in the Lower Sixth. The first theoretical paper is based on Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity. The second paper is based on Mechanics, Materials and Waves. There is also a practical module examination.
