A Level Music at Great Sankey High School

Course description

Barrow Hall College offers an AS/A Level course (AQA) which has a strong element of variety and is a natural progression from GCSE. Music is given a high profile within the school as can be seen by the level of musical opportunities, equipment and accommodation within the department. The department is also the regional centre for The National Festival of Music for Youth. At Barrow Hall College we have a 100% A-C grade at A Level for the third year running - 2013 100% A Grade

Unit 2 Composing: Creating Musical Ideas

Unit 3 Performing: Interpreting Musical Ideas

A2 Level

Unit 4 - Music in Context

Unit 5 - Composing: Developing Musical Ideas

Unit 6 - Performing: A Musical Performance

Entry requirements

You will need to have a minimum of 5 A* - C grades at GCSE to study this course. You should have passed GSCE Music at a minimum of Grade B. A pass at Grade 4 - 5 Theory would be considered as an alternative to GCSE. You should also be at the standard of at least Grade 4 – 5 practical on your main instrument/ voice or be competent at sequencing and multi tracking using Music Technology. Prior knowledge of basic music reading is essential.


AS - Unit 1 is worth 30%, Unit 2 30% and Unit 3 40% of the AS grade

A2 - Unit 4 is worth 40%, Unit 5 30% and Unit 6 30% of the A2 grade
