Community Sports Leadership Level 1 Award at Northampton School for Girls

Course description

The CSLA develops and extends a range of skills required when working with people. There will be opportunities for developing and assessing key skills in organisation, communication and information technology.

Course content

What you will doComplete eight units through demonstrations, research, student directed tasks, group work, individual set tasks, practice, observation and educational visits. The eight units comprise: Organisational skillsLeagues and competitionsSafety in sportImprovisation of activitiesKnow your friendsGames and activity experienceFitness for sportTen hours voluntary leadership experience

Entry requirements

CSLA concentrates on the personal qualities of a leader using sport activites as a medium.  You do not necessarily have to be good at sport, but must have an enthusiastic interest in working with people.  To be a leader you need to be organised, reliable, mature and responsible, and be able to use your initiative effectively as you will be working closely with various groups of people within the local community.


Continuous assessment throughout CSLA course. Demonstration of skills and knowledge will be assessed, alongside confidence, commitment, responsibility, organisation, reliability, maturity, effort, communication, enthusiasm, initiative. Methods of assessment - Observation of performance; Performance of specially set tasks; Questioning and successful completion of 10 hours voluntary leadership experience.

Future opportunities

 Many employers, training agencies, further and higher educational institutes now recognise the award and seek possible candidates who have successfully passed the course. Careers opportunities are endless for those who hold the CSLA. These are a few ideas: PE teaching, coaching, play scheme worker, community link officer, youth club leader, sports' development officer, nursery nurse, day care assistant, youth worker, leisure centre assistant, fitness instructor.
