Physical Education AS and A Level at Alder Grange Community and Technology School

Course description

The focus of this course is on participation and performance in physical activity as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle. As a PE student you will increase your physical competence and develop your involvement and effectiveness in physical activity. This course will enable you to become an informed and discerning decision-maker in relation to your own and others’ involvement in physical activity.

The style of teaching for this syllabus is varied, although emphasis is based on practical activities in some of the key areas. We use our own sports facilities, including our sports hall and fitness suite as well as those in the local area.

Course content

For AS Level:

At AS, the specification develops knowledge and skills to help understand the opportunities for, and effects of, leading a healthy and active lifestyle:

  • Opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle
  • Analysis and evaluation of physical activity as performer and/or in an adopted role/s.

At A2 Level:

At A2, the specification enables candidates to further develop their understanding of key philosophical concepts, themes, texts and techniques:

  • Optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues within sport
  • Optimising practical performance in a competitive situation.

Entry requirements

C or 5 in PE or Science.

    • Alder Grange Sixth Form (ag6) opened as a new Sixth Form in 2010. Since then we have recruited students from across Rossendale and beyond on to a range of both A Level and BTEC level 3 courses. We have been delighted that our results have improved year on year and that Alder Grangers have successfully moved on from Sixth Form to University or the world of work in areas ranging from Music Production and Zoology to Teaching and Engineering. We have developed a strong sense of community and a warm, caring and supportive ethos.
