Media Studies A-Level at Carr Hill High School and Sixth Form Centre
Media studies enables students to:
- enhance their appreciation and engagement with the media and its role in their daily lives
- develop critical understanding of the media through engagement with media products and concepts and through the creative application of practical skills
- explore production processes, technologies and media theory.
- become independent in research skills and their application in their practical work and in developing their own views and interpretations on Media content and the world around them.
Unit 1 - Unit 1 is all about exploring the Media and how it works. You will analyse media products and learn how to explain them, through reference to the 4 key concepts in Media: representation, media forms, institution and audience. You will also study one subject area in depth - this year it is Film Franchises in the Media and The News.
Unit 2 - Unit 2 is the coursework element; this allows you to research into and then create your own realistic media products.
Unit 3 - Unit 3 looks at ways of explaining and understanding the Media and how it works. Theoretical elements such as post-modernism, feminism and Marxism feature. The emphasis on independent study is enhanced as students are asked to complete a case study on either digital and new media or representation.
Unit 4 - In this final Unit you will create an individual piece of work which will give you the chance to understand the relationship between research and practical media production.
If you like films, watch TV, read magazines or use facebook you are already interested in what the media has to offer - so why not discover more?
