Drama & Theatre Studies A Level at Itchen College

Course description

If you are interested in taking a course which allows you to think in a practical and academic way about the theatre, production and plays, this is the course for you.

This course is for you if... are curious about issues and ideas and have a creative instinct for communicating your views through drama. are keen on acting, writing or on the visual and technical side of the theatre and wish to develop your skills in some or all of these areas.

Taking this course also allows you to become a part of our Creative Arts Academy.

Course content

This course combines the activities of exploring and performing plays, creating and analysing theatre and the critical evaluation of all these elements. You will develop an understanding of drama and theatre, analytical and creative skills, and an ability to communicate effectively with others. The course demands practical, creative and communication skills in almost equal measure. The course will involve taking part in drama productions, as well as studying plays and playwrights.

Your first year of study will consist of two units:

Exploration of Drama and Theatre

  • In this unit you will be introduced to two or three contrasting plays. You may also look at the work of some famous theatre practitioners or theatre companies. 

Theatre Text in Performance

  • This unit offers you the chance to demonstrate skills in a performance environment. In this unit you will perform a role in a production of a play. The assessment for this unit takes the form of practical performances that include group and solo/duo elements.

During your second year dramatic studies are further developed by the following units:

Exploration of Dramatic Performance

  • This unit requires the creation of a unique and original piece of theatre. You will be assessed on both the process of creation and the finished product in the form of a performance to an invited audience as well a supporting written evidence documents.

Theatre Text in Context

  • This externally assessed written exam unit

Entry requirements

Grades 9-4 in English and four or more GCSEs at grades 9-4 and A*-C.

Additional guidance is available at interview. 


80% written assessment 20% practical

Further information

Students will take part in showcases throughout the year and go on visits to theatres, dance studios and world renowned destinations.
