AS Level French at The Rugeley Sixth Form Academy
For AS level, language students work on two modules which are assessed in Unit one and Unit two at the end of the first year. They contain a range of contemporary and cultural topics based on Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living and Family Relationships. For the A2 component, two further modules are studied. The topics at this level are a little more demanding than those at AS, and include students researching 2 cultural topics of their choice.. Both courses emphasise the four skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) with which all students will be familiar from their GCSE studies. In both AS and A2 there is an oral examination. Skills and attributes that students need to be successful: Students need a sound command of the language, which entails having a wide vocabulary and a grasp of grammatical structures. They need to develop an interest in contemporary issues and past events related to the language of study. They will need analytical skills to cope with grammar. So as to broaden their linguistic and cultural interests, students should ideally be prepared to take part in the county exchange or work experience abroad. What students do after successful completion? Some students go on to study languages at University. Many opt for vocational courses with a foreign language. Some combine a foreign language at degree level with an unrelated subject such as a science or business studies. Others go directly into employment. As members of the EU, employers value highly competence in a foreign language. Modern Languages is useful for careers in teaching, translation, the travel industry, journalism, customs and all businesses involved with exporting and importing goods and services.
Students should fulfil the general entry requirements to study A levels at the Academy, including a B or above at GCSE level in their language of choice.
