English Literature A Level at New Charter Academy & 6th Form

Course description

Exploring the reading process can be an immensely rewarding and enriching experience and it is with this in mind that the English literature A-level course is offered.

English Literature is a wide ranging, thought-provoking and exciting course which includes the detailed study of twentieth century novels, plays, and poems, as well as Shakespeare and many other important writers from the past. Students are encouraged to look for links between texts and challenge existing assumptions made about texts and writers.

Prospective students should have studied English Literature at GCSE and have a good pass in this subject and in English Language GCSE.

Course content

This A Level is an ideal choice for anyone who loves reading and books. You need to have a passion for Literature and be interested in the big questions affecting human existence. It is also a highly respected A Level that can be instrumental in helping students gain university places in a variety of subjects. Students will also gain a great deal of academic prowess through a subject that promotes the development of transferable skills. English students are taught to think analytically, consider different interpretations and listen and respond to one another sensitively in preparation for the seminar style environment they are likely to find at university. One of the most important skills they learn is how to write coherently and critically. This is an essential skill that will aid them in their other subjects and is invaluable in higher education and the world of employment.

Studying English Literature will give you opportunities to attend theatre performances, museum visits and conferences and residential visits.

You need to meet the stated Academy entry requirements for AS/A2 courses and have a B grade or above in GCSE English language.
