Design Technology at Felixstowe Academy

Course description

Teaching is designed to encourage an understanding of the economic, social, aesthetic, cultural and enviromental factors that contribute to the making of a product. This is acheived through practical coursework, formal instruction and discussion, and product research and analysis.

Course content

AS Units:

  • Design and make tasks
  • product design

A2 Units:

  • Designing skills
  • making skills

Entry requirements

A minimum of GCSE grade C design and technology in graphic products, resistant materials or textiles.

Entry into A2 requires A-C grades at AS level product design. Entry to A2 with a lower grade will be approved or declined in discussion with subject teacher and the head of sixth form.

Future opportunities

Design open the door to many careers. It provides a solid foundation for a broad range of design courses, from product design, manufacture and engineer degrees, to art/graphics based courses and interior design. Employers and universities place great value on analytical and problem solving skills gained by students of design.
